Description

Since I've been asked to do this by about 20 people I figured it was time to stop putting it off and just get it done. Keep in mind the principles are the same for whatever character you draw. Doesn't need to be Sally in the end. The third drawing is going to be used for a drawing challenge at :iconsally-fan-club: Go check it out and take part if you're interested. Even if your not a Sally fan, I'm sure it'll still be good practice for anyone who takes part.

:bulletblue:Step 1:bulletblue:

The first step is to establish your pose. Drawing it out like a "constellation" will determine the characters proportions, length of limbs and that your drawing will fit on the page. You shouldn't be adding any details (like facial features or clothing) until everything else is worked out. use circles to represent the characters head and joints.

:bulletblue:Step 2:bulletblue:

Since this is a tutorial, I've fully drawn out each shape that I think represents all the characters key body parts. I don't normally draw in structure to this degree unless I am having alot of trouble making the character look correct. I think if you do a good job on Step 1 you can kind of slack on Step 2. Pay attention to the way limbs curve. Legs aren't just straight up and down like a ruler. Between the foot and the knee there is a subtle curve backwards and from the knee to the hip there is a subtle curve forward. Knowing where to add curves will add alot more life to you character. Keep perspective in mind when drawing each shape, especially on the face. using cross hairs is an excellent way to position the eyes, nose and mouth on the head circle. In this case for the hair and tail a general shape can be drawn in and detail added later once you get to that step.

:bulletblue:Step 3:bulletblue:

Go ahead and start putting in whatever detail you want. Since this is for reference I have chosen to draw the character nude for simplicity. Perspective and structure are also important in clothing, hair and props as well. Try to incorporate your detail to work with your underlying structure so that the general shape is still obvious.

A good practice exercise would be to take the third finished drawing and trace over it putting in all the structure shapes (example Step 2).

Use this tutorial any way you like. Feel free to trace it and use it to create your own characters using this as a base if you need help getting started. I've kept the pose pretty basic so it could be adapted pretty easily. If you are looking for some extra help with Sally's face this might be of help: [link]
