Update.

Sun May 30, 2010, 12:15 PM
Typing on the worst pc in the world right now at my moms. Can't reply to notes or comments because nearly everytime I click on somehting the pc freezes. I'm probably really pushing my luck trying to make a journal.

Anyway, still no computer. I finished my job placement. And...da da da...I got hired on. ;) So I am now an actual employed functioning member of society. Yepper. Now to get an appartment and a place for all my crap.

My dA account is full of messages I can't sort through until later. Lots of other stuff has happened but...I'll just leave this update simple and to the point.

Back later...

We could try diagnosing and fixin' your Mom's PC, if you like. I do that weekly, at a Computer Club here in Phuket.

The good news is, if the freezes are frequent, they're easier to diagnose than problems that happen infrequently-and-without-apparent-pattern.

Random frequent freezes could be one of several things:
1) Faulty power (the big silver box inside the big computer box), or wall-power that flickers. Try moving the PC to a different neighborhood for a day or two, to see if the problem persists.
2) Faulty RAM chips. If the PC ever refuses to start and makes a beep-beep-beep sound, this could be RAM at fault, or a wonky video card. Look inside the PC. If it's got two RAM boards (finger-sized green cards clipped to the big board in the bottom) try removing one of the RAM boards, see if the problem persists. Then swap the one half for the other half, and see if the problem persists. (Always put the board being used in the slot marked "0", "DIMM 0", "SIMM 0", or something similar, not the one marked "...1". This'll give you an indication if the problem's RAM, and which board the problem might be on.

The problem might be in a faulty fan, or faulty CPU chip-- possibly from overheating. That's a bit hard to diagnose, except by swapping out with parts I assume y'ain't got.

So, how about this new job? Is it in art, or ...?

awesome, grats on the job, it's always a good feeling to know you're not just being a bother to the society. :3

hope you get a computer soon, it's hella annoying to work with a crappy one.

Could be worse, the computer could be halting at boot-up for about 3 hours, and then crashing around 80% of the time you go to log on. Ah the old days of win-doh!-s 98.

Good to hear about your job placement. Here's hoping you don't either get shuffled out as a temp, or get overloaded as the newbie.
